Dr. Maier was born in Houston a long time ago, when the football team called itself the Oilers and a man named Carter was POTUS. He attended St. Rose of Lima, Seton Catholic Junior High, and St. Thomas (to the chagrin of his students at Jesuit). He received his B.A. summa cum laude in Plan II Honors and German Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. He moved on to graduate studies at the University of Virginia and received his M.A. in German Literature two years later. He then spent five years living in Germany and France, teaching English at a business college, traveling around the Old World, making friends from many countries, and learning languages. In 2006, he returned to the United States, and in 2012, he obtained his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington, where he taught Comparative Literature, Spanish, French, and German. Before coming to Jesuit in 2014, Dr. Maier taught Latin, French, Spanish, German, and Italian at the Overlake School near Seattle. At Jesuit, he has taught English 1, English 2, English 3, AP English Language, AC English 3, and AP Spanish Literature. He has also worked as an assistant in Cross Country and Quiz Bowl and is now serving as Chair of the English Department. When not grading essays, he enjoys travel (having visited 18 countries), tennis (imitating Roger Federer), swimming, running, reading, learning quiz bowl clues, and studying foreign languages. He feels very blessed to be a member of the community at Jesuit.
